What are you giving?

It has always been a joy of mine to receive. The anticipation of what is inside the gift is almost more than I can take at times. But through the years I have come to enjoy giving. It is enjoyable to give to those I love and to watch there faces when they open the package on Christmas morning or on a special occasion.

Giving is an important part of the Christian's life and responsibility. The idea of giving is often talked about during December, but it should be a practice throughout the year. The giving that is the most important is not something that we can wrap up in a small box or even a large box for that matter. The giving that is the best is the giving of ourselves, the giving of the heart and spirit.

Recently as I stood at the entrance of our small church awaiting those that would be coming to Sunday School, one of the children came in to the church and quickly handed me a piece of paper with a drawing on it. The drawing did not cost anything monetarily, it was not wrapped up with bows and ribbon and it would not have been considered to be of great value. But the drawing was for me from the heart and spirit of a child that wanted to share.

In the midst of your busy Christmas celebrations, it might be a good idea to take the time and mark your calendar reminding yourself to do a bit of giving throughout the coming year. But be sure it is the giving from the heart and spirit and not so much from the pocketbook. It may be a kind word, a short letter, an invitation to sit and talk, or it maybe something creative that will that time and a bit of work. The most important thing is that you keep giving. I think someone once said something like "...it is more blessed to give than receive."
